Enjoy the process of making good music. Like what MrWong said, it is the process that matters and our job is to make good music, forget about the medals first. Let's do our part well to do justice to the music we're playing and the result will naturally come. It's just this 5 days! Let's remember the directions given and we be different from other bands. :)

To not be afraid of performing on stage, to not be nervous. Its hard, but even if you are, you have to ensure that it will not affect your mind, because only then, we will not let the music down. Love the process of making music, because its what matters most. It is your job to make every rehearsal, every performance count be it a small or big events, because we are musicians and we make music not noise. Everyone counts, The band is as strong as its weakest player. So all of us play a part, and every single one is important! Let's do our best in making good music with good basics alright? :) We're all in this together!

Dearest band, it's only 7 days to SYF. Let's all hold on! Work for what you want and not only through words. The amount of efforts put in is the results you'll get. But more importantly, you need to enjoy making music on stage. How? Put your trust into mr Wong because he is the one who will be guiding you guys, and remember the mistakes we learnt and never do it. I trust you guys, do not be afraid, do not be nervous. Just by looking at mr Wong gives you all the assurance you need. As long as you look at mr Wong, you can't really see the audience. So, look at mr Wong :)

For tomorrow's performanc, treat it like syf. Showcase what you've learnt, same thing, look at mr Wong. You know you can do it! :) I'll see you guys tomorrow 630 am sharp in the bandroom. Jiayou band!

Hi band.

It is the last stretch already. We have no more time to waste, no more time to slack, no more time to say you are tired, no more time to say that you want to give up! No more!!
The seniors should know the feeling of attaining a silver again the last SYF, do you want to feel the same way that they felt when you are about to leave the conference hall in 2 weeks time? Please do not sabotage the band. We have spend so much time together, just trying to make all the rhythm/dynamic/tempo/articulation etc right, and at this point of time, if you feel like giving up, think back, how much time have your SL sacrifice just to make things back at the right track? Do you want to walk out of the conference hall to have the that awesome feeling? Do you want to feel that your efforts have been paid off? I am sure you do not want disappointments. Therefore, every time you feel like giving up, tell yourself, you cannot give up now!! You have no time to think about the negative stuffs.
Band, I am sure you have yet to polish up your choice and set piece. For the choice piece, the celebration, finale, victory and the ending, you need to put in a lot a lot a lot of effort. You know where you stand now, it all depends weather you want to do it or not.

Always remember the seniors, alumnis, mr wong, teacher-in-charge, current leaders lub you guys deep deep deep. :))))

We have finished filming our marching video, so now what we can do is to, gear up for SYF. Please work very hard towards SYF in April 2011.

Please remember what Mr Chan has taught you guys on Friday for Memories of Friendship. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT. Not only that, you have to also remember what Mr Wong taught as well! After knowing, explaining etc, you must apply them, if not what's the point of teaching you guys and then not applying. We will be missing LOTS and LOTS of band practices this week and next week, due to the camps and chinese new year period. So please make sure you guys do a lot of individual practices. :)

Band practices will be resuming next week!!

I hope you guys have been practicing damn hard for the upcoming KL exchange cum concert!

The band leaders have been trying their best to try to open the band room ALMOST every single day for you to practice. We sacrificed our own time just for you guys! I am pretty sure that YOUR SL is super anxious about your parts etc, please do not disappoint them and also make them feel unhappy. I am very sure if you guys didn't practice super damn hard for the concert pieces, you'll confirm regret what you've done previously or you'll confirm feel super upset about yourself.

Before stepping into the band room for the band practice next Monday, ask yourself, have you been practicing super hard? =)

At the mean time, please double check if your passport has 6 months validity! I hope nobody will be stopped at the customs. And if you have any problems/questions regarding the KL trip, please please go and ask your SL/ any band leaders / our teacher-in-charge. Please do not wait until the last min then you inform us that you have this and that problems!

Please use these time wisely. Hopefully use these times for sectionals! Contact your SL if they haven't messaged you to come back for sectionals or something! :)

It is the band break period now. You have to work hard in order to make our overseas concert a success. But not only work hard during the band break, make sure you have completed your holiday assignments so that you need not rush after the concert! And also play hard, enjoy this holiday, take a break. Try to spend some time with your section/family/friends. Organise an outing to make your section, a united section. Or maybe spend some time with your family & friends. =)

I hope you guys have learnt your lesson from the last exchange, so now it is time to make a difference!!!

In case you are wondering why we have to sing in certain pieces like "Believe" , Here's why.

Young instrumentalists should learn to sing so they can learn to hear

“You mean I have to sing?” I hear this question time after time when administering placement examinations to freshman music majors. Like most college music programs, ours bases acceptance primarily on the ability to perform on one’s instrument. Focused on this objective, many music majors enter their programs with little or no experience in sight-singing or ear training.
What does singing have to do with playing an instrument? As any trained musician will tell you, it has everything to do with it. Singing is closely linked to hearing, and hearing is the essential skill of musical performance. Instrumentalists learn to sing not to perform vocally, but to learn how to hear without the aid of their instruments.

When taking the first steps toward mastering a musical instrument, a student learns to associate specific notes with specific fingerings. I refer to this as the “typing” stage, since it reminds me of the way we type at a word processor.

We see the letter A, we push the key for A, and that’s what appears on the screen. Similarly, the beginning instrumentalist sees a note of the staff, presses the appropriate keys, blows through the instrument, and the note is produced.
But it must be understood that nothing except notes can ever be produced by this method. No matter how proficient one becomes at pressing the correct keys in response to notes seen on the page, no music will ever result. Music is not a clerical skill, but rather the process of producing sounds in response to what has been heard with the inner ear.
Musicians understand the tremendous importance of being able to hear music independently of any physical sound. The entire creative process in music relies upon this.
A performer conceives of a musical passage, complete with dynamics, articulation, pitch, tone and all relevant musical parameters, and then endeavors to recreate this aural image with the aid of an instrument. Notes on the page merely serve as a rough guide to the general characteristics of the actual music.

So now whenever you come across pieces that you need to sing, do so proudly and loudly, Because you are learning to hear while you sing and LISTENING is a very important factor for being a good musician. :)

NOTE: THIS IS A WORDY POST.

1 more week to paragon.

To play well, you have to be confident enough. Don't let your nervousness take over your confidence. We are all humans and have flaws. Even if your physical appearance, unique personality, or social skills aren't what you wish they were, that doesn't have to stop you from being confident. Confidence translated literally from Latin means "to have faith in oneself". Not only confidence, you have to also do your part to play well. Like practicing all your individual skills, slowly to section and then to the band. This is what you guys have learnt from Mr Wong, isn't it?

Firstly, never put yourself down. Everybody is different in their personality, character and weather they are fast or slow learner. Secondly, don't allow peer pressure to affect you too. Some peer pressure may be good, some peer pressure are not good. It depends, but if you feel that it is not good to you, forget them. Thirdly, never let negative stuffs affect you. For example, you have a particular friend that always pick on you and has the intentions to hurt you both emotionally and physically. They do that because they think that they are better than you. Lastly, success doesn't comes overnight. To gain all the confidence that you need, you have to work hard for it. If you feel that you do not have self confidence, it is because you are worried about how others will think about you. You have to ignore what they think, and just be who you are. Remember: Not only you are in this together, it is 40 over band mates are in this together!

ALL THE WAY BAND. WE CAN DO IT! :)
If you can overcome the fear of playing at paragon, why can't you do it for other events? :)
Everybody is doing this together, so come on, do something about it to achieve greater and better results! :)

The Music Talent Development Centre (MTDC) Band Programme is a new initiative by the Ministry of Education, Education Programmes Division to provide developmental opportunities for musically talented students to harness their musical potential. The secondary school band MTDC programme is currently being prototyped for the South zone and is housed at Ang Mo Kio Secondary School. The programme includes group instrumental tuition by professional instructors, combined band practices and theory instruction.

In this connection, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the inaugural MTDC Concert which will feature the first batch of graduating MTDC participants. The concert will be held on Wednesday, 16 June 2010 at the Esplanade Concert Hall at 7.30pm. The concert will feature Flight: Adventure In The Sky, a piece specially dedicated to the MTDC Band Programme, by local composer, Mr Benjamin Yeo. The band will also perform familiar favourites such as Light Cavalry Overture, Hobbits Dances and Hymm, Dance Fever and Earth, Wind & Fire in Concert, under the baton of their conductor, Mr Brando Tan.

Hi band.
The bandroom will be opened from 2-4 tomorrow.
Everyone is to come and borrow their instruments home.
Meanwhile, you can use the 2 hours wisely to clear your doubts with your seniors, especially the Sec 1's. If you can't attend the short two hour sectionals, at least come and borrow your instruments home, including the Sec 1's. Sec 1's, please treat your instrument with great care!
For the brasses, do not drop your mouth piece/knock your instrument against something. Same goes for the woodwinds.

These are the things that you guys will need to work on, firstly, for the Juniors.

1)Long Tones - Low Concet Bb and F note.

2)Memorize fingerings for concert Bb major scales and chromatic scales starting from your Low Concert Bb.

3)Improve on your note reading skills. Please refer to this theory website:

For Seniors, there is a new piece that MrWong wants us to start learning.
"Perseus" by Satoshi Yagisawa.
Please get the score ready and start learning this piece, the score should be already in the library,
Please go and listen to it. Woodwinds, please do not freak out when you see the beginning as the tempo it really really slow.
Also, do not neglect your Jericho and March Blue Sky. They are equally important as well.
For the Junior members of tubas and Euphonium, you guys gotta work hard, as you will need to learn March Blue Sky, Jericho and "Perseus" as well.

The Seniors should already have the To-Do list for individual practice. For those who don't have it, or threw it away, here are the things that you should follow to ensure a beneficial practice.

Basic Technique Routine:

Very important as an instrumentalist.
Please follow instructions closely.
Practice at least 30mins a day to ensure you get maximum benefit from your individual practices.

To the percussionist:
Practice hard on your strokes regime to gain even better independence of left & right hand and wrist work.
If you have vic firth’s snare drum method book 1 & 2, practice it everyday. I’d given it to you guys long time ago, remember?
Different and variations of accented attacks are very important!
Percussionist must also work with various tempo and dynamics. Not all music are slow or loud. For goodness sake, please use a metronome! There’s no compromise in this issue.
Cover all written exercises (like those snare drum parts) in your band method books (3D, TIPPS, Total Training, JBC). You will notice there are progressive materials written in total training, for example.
Try to lay your hands on a keyboard to figure out mallet parts. I’m sure there are people in the band who own pianos or electronic keyboards.

Section leaders can organize sectionals at houses/void decks/at parks.
You can also organize small outings like lunch/dinner/movie/homework sessions!
Try to meet up once a week for catching up!
Our band CAN achieve great things! Jiayou jiayou jiayou!!!

I'll try to get teacher's in-charge to get everyone a copy of the to-do list. Try to follow okay, Remember, MrWong just asks for 15-30 mins everyday, it won't kill. I'm sure you can afford the amount of time. :)

Hi Bandmates!

Remember that we need to work harder in order to improve! Have you practiced? We need everyone's cooperation so that we can strive for the better! You have to remember that we are not as bad as you may think we are, you have proven to yourself that you know how to be in tuned, right? The word "band" refers to a performing ensemble consisting of several members of the woodwind instrument family, brass instrument family and percussion instrument family.

No matter how many people criticise us, no matter how hurting words can be, no matter how embarrassing it is for some people to say that we are not a GOLD band, you have to remember:

1)We have good instruments; our instruments are new enough to be called as ours. They are not second hand.

2)We are still learning;we,humans, are forever learning! Perhaps some of us need more time to "digest" our knowledge, but as long as you don't give up on yourself, you don't have to feel bad about it.

3)We can be better; we still have the potential to improve!!!!!! Although we are not the best, we are not the worst! GOLD awards, GOLD WITH HONOR awards, they are indicators of how good a band performs on-stage!

4)Don't lose faith; believe in yourselves! For example, you failed to do well in a particular class test and you face pressure; your parents are disappointed because they have high expectations, and some of your classmates think that you are not good enough, what are you going to do? Tell yourself, "At least, I have done my best!" if you have done your best to study, to get your contents in textbooks right! As long as you have already tried, as long as you are willing to learn from your mistakes, I am proud of you, band!

5)Mr Wong loves us, same goes to Mr Lee, Mdm Azlina, Ms Suharti and all the teachers-in-charge. We sometimes may hear harsh words, but if we are not scolded for our wrong doings, we will never improve! I can admit that I am not afraid of being scolded, perhaps I may be afraid of being yelled at, but what I am afraid of is not to know my mistakes. We are blessed to have our teachers to be there to correct us, if we are not corrected, we might not even know how to pick up a musical instrument!

I hope that you will understand what I am trying to deliver to you guys. By the way, have you all prepared things required for the CCA orientation?The list below indicates the respective sections/people that are in-charged of;

Into its 9th year, this Junior College and Polytechnic Band Festival will showcase talented musicians from various Junior Colleges and Polytechnics. Also joining the Band Festival this year is the Nadarzyn Wind Orchestra, a multi-award winning band from Poland. Musicians will be grouped into festival bands to perform under the baton of local and international guest conductors.

Hi band mates,

This is our November schedule. As you can see, we are left with 3 MORE WEEKS before band practice resumes!!! I hope that you are managing your time well , and I hope that you are able to practice playing your instruments at least two times a week.

If you are unable to cope, here is a suggested schedule for daily individual practice:

Week one:

Physical warm up(5min-10min)- Breathing Exercise

- Upper body warm up Exercise

(You may choose to close your eyes while doing these physical warm up exercise.)

*To train your stamina, go for a jog/run. Run for at least 800m for Week one.

Basic Training:(Choose at least 3 for every practice)

Long note exercise(*with metronome. If you don't have any, look at the clock. Follow every second the clock ticks. This is taken as a given pulse.)

-in different scales

-make sure that the value of every note is not shortchanged

-take in deep breath

-*do your best!

Long note exercise with crescendo and decrescendo

-make sure that the loudness of every note increases/decreases evenly

-take in sufficient air

-CONCENTRATE! FOCUS!

-*do your best!

Long note exercise with effects(e.g sfzpetc.)

-make sure that you or your audience(e.g your mum, or your neighbour) are able to hear the difference in the loudness of each note

Hi bandmates,

This is our September schedule. Please come in school uniform and report in the band room by 9am settled down with your instruments. Please be reminded to bring your shopping bag and a set of colour pencils to literally colour our music.

I am proud that our band has improved in discipline. Thank you for cooperating as a band. However, we still have a long way to go; we have to polish up our basics as most of us are unable to apply our knowledge on music. Have no fear, we will keep on improving as long as everyone has the 'never-say-die' spirit and everyone is able to cooperate together as one.

Hi bandmates,

I am pleased to see that there is an increase in the number of pupils attending individual/section practice today. Please keep up with your good work as we progress!

However, for those who choose to attend our band practices whenever they like may be trying to tell us that:

1) You are afraid of making mistakes
You want to runaway. You are stressed. You want to stay away from your seniors/peers. You are afraid that you will get scolded.

2) You are selfish
You do not want to shoulder responsibilities. Has this phrase, "Even if I don't come for band, my seniors/peers will help me cover my parts! So what's the BIG DEAL?", ever come across your mind before? If yes, you are in the wrong!

3) You are too good to be in this band
You need not to practice because you are already a professional. You think that you belong to a more professional band.

4) You do not enjoy
PRESSURE, PRESSURE, PRESSURE...

5) You are cold-hearted
You do not think of how the others feel. Even if you have hurt them, you do not have to worry as you yourself is not hurt at all!

This is a warning. I believe that we humans are egoistic and cannot afford to lose our dignity. If you do not want the whole band to have a bad impression of you, come to band and face the music! We will not abandon you as long as you do not abandon us.

Dear committee members,
I would like to apologise that I had cancelled our meeting today as not all committee members have received this infomation. We can only conduct our committee meeting effectively when every member is present. There will be a short meeting tmr after band practice. We will be discussing about how to teach our members more effectively and also about getting more organised. I hope that we will have enough time tmr for us to conduct our meeting together before the school closes.

Hi band,
The band room will be opened @ 1.30pm-5pm tmr, 25/8, and also on this thursday, 27/8. SLs, pls conduct sectionals with quality time. To all committee members, there will be meetings tmr and this thursday. Our committee meetings will be conducted for approximately 1hr.

For our fullband this wednesday, 26/8, pls report in the band room settled down with your instruments by 2.30pm. If everyone cooperates, our physical exercises and warm up exercises can be conducted more smoothly.

Band members, I know that most of you are facing difficulties in band, whether on learning on how to play your musical pieces well as a member or to be able to carry out tasks assigned to you as a SL, but please remember this:

1) Mr Wong and our teachers-in-charged love us.

They put in a lot of effort to make the best out of us. Our teachers show respect to us, shower us with love and care, and never give up hope on us. I believe that you also love them dearly. If you love them, do the same thing as well. We are very blessed to have such great teachers who will always support us.

2) You are not alone. When you feel stressed, everyone can feel the tension as well.

Have you heard of the phrase 'One for All, All for One'? We are a band. When one of us is unhappy, we will be affected. When your senior is unhappy, you will be unhappy as well. Never to forget that.

3) Don't give up!

What happens when you tripped over your leg one day and fell? What will you do? Sit down there and cry? No. When you fall, get up and continue to walk. Similarly, when you make mistakes in your playing, learn from your mistakes and make sure that you will not repeat the same mistake again.

4) Don't bottle up your feelings!

When you have something that is bothering you, please find someone to talk to. I understand that you feel stress most of the time in band as music is not an easy language to learn. You may find it difficult to cope with what you are learning and sometimes these things may overwhelm you.

5) You are responsible

The seniors are responsible to teach the juniors how to play their instruments well. However, this does not mean that the seniors are to be blamed when the juniors are unable to play well. The juniors are responsible for asking questions when they are at doubt. When you are unsure of something, don't hesitate to ask for help. Nobody in the band will eat you up when you ask a question because nobody in the band likes to eat humans.

6) Enjoy!

Everyone here is a musician. We are musicians. We know music, but the question is, how good are we at making music? Musicians make music to bring joy to the audience. Musicians make music to bring satisfaction among them. Musicians make music to deliver a message from the composer. Musicians make music, not noise. To be good musicians, let's start by learning how to appreciate music and be responsible for our learning!
